Career Details

March 2022 - Present

Research Associate

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance

My team studies western burrowing owl conservation using a variety of methods, including captive breeding, active translocation and passive relocation, GPS telemetry, and collaborative management at mitigation sites in southern California.

May 2022 - Present

Research Technician

UCSB Marine Science Institute

Assisting in a Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project aimed at describing population dynamics of sea urchin settlement (genus Strongylocentrotus) both spatially and temporally. Using bi-weekly deployments of pier-based settlement stations at Scripps Institute of Oceanography and Ocean Beach, I bring the samples back to the lab and classify the invertebrate species in each haul.

February 2022 - Present

Field Technician

Cal Poly Pomona Foundation

Working on an at-will basis to perform data collection for ongoing intertidal biodiversity surveys. Outplant Silvetia compressa in an effort to restore intertidal zone population and promote a healthy nursery habitat for fish recruitment.

September 2021 - December 2021

UCSB Wetland Field Technician III

UCSB Marine Science Institute

Worked as part of a small team to tackle an ambitious field schedule of fish and invertebrate data collection using physically demanding methods of seining, enclosing and coring. Collected a variety of wetland monitoring data including tidal flow using a River Surveyor acoustic doppler, water quality (dissolved oxygen, salinity, temperature, and salinity) using HOBOware environmental loggers, elevation using RTK trimble and survey pro software, saltmarsh vegetation classification and abundance using quadrats and transects. Identified microscopic organisms to lowest taxonomic rank from small soil cores obtained in the field. Entered data and performed quality assurance and control in relational databases.

January 2021 -
August 2021

Veterinary Technician

U.S. Army MEDCOMM

Provided veterinary care for Military Working Dogs (MWD) and on-base pets. Collected biological samples, placed intravenous catheters, entered lab reports, and transcribed patient histories. Regularly assisted active duty military personnel with planning international pet transports as part of a permanent change of station.

September 2017 - September 2020

Graduate Student Researcher

UC Santa Cruz Dept. of Ocean Sciences

Conduct physiological research with trained marine mammals including California sea lions, harbor seals, bearded seals, ringed seals, spotted seals, and southern sea otters. Graduate research is focused on the physiology of ice-dependent Arctic seals. Proficient in open-flow respirometry protocols and data collection, as well as ultrasound blubber measurements, direct morphometrics, and data collection management across two facilities (Long Marine Laboratory in Santa Cruz, CA and the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward, AK).

September 2014 - September 2017

Marine Mammal Trainer and Research Technician

Long Marine Laboratory

Skilled in the training of marine mammals for research, including seals, sea lions, and sea otters. Mentor students, interns and volunteers. Facilitate hands-on learning experiences including training undergraduates how to collect, enter, and analyze data, as well as support animal care and training for captive research.

September 2018 - March 2019

Science Mentor (WATCH Program)

UCSC | Monterey Bay Aquarium

Guide high-school students through the scientific process using inquiry-based techniques. Develop a group research project in Younger Lagoon, then assist with data collection, analysis, and preparation for presentation at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

February 2017 - September 2017

Scientific Aid

California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife

Performed recreational fisheries surveys and collected morphometric data on a variety of fish species in the Monterey Bay and Santa Cruz.

March - June 2016

Research Volunteer

NOAA

Collected and counted rockfish larval samples; assisted with rockfish husbandry and morphometric data collection.

September 2015

Necropsy Volunteer

OIKONOS

Performed necropsies to determine cause of death in seabirds including northern fulmars, sooty shearwaters, and black-footed albatrosses.

2015, 2016, 2019

Field Research Volunteer

Costa Lab | UC Santa Cruz

Participated in seasonal censusing re-sighting, tagging, and handling of northern elephant seals on the Año Nuevo colony.

May - August 2014

Animal Care and Training Intern

U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program

Assisted in husbandry and training duties for bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions. Experience aboard dinghy and pontoon boats, including boat maintenance.
